Seconds Club in the Waikato Times

Seconds Club in the Waikato Times

Seconds Club is in the Waikato Times, as part of New to Town, the paper's weekly series on new businesses in the region. Katie Hunter wrote the story, with photos by Mark Taylor.

How it started

I started Seconds Club 18 months ago in Hamilton, after discovering Japan's second-hand market. It's still just me behind it.

The story covers how that happened, how my background in graphic design ended up shaping the business, and how each piece is authenticated before it reaches you.

Why pre-loved

Katie asked why more people are choosing second-hand.

"I think people are a lot more concerned about circular fashion."

I do think that's changing how people shop. A pre-loved piece can give you more value than buying new, and it gets a second home along the way.

What's next

Our sales are split fairly evenly between New Zealand and Australia, with the rest going further afield. Next, I'm planning pop-ups in cities across both countries. I'm also sourcing more accessories, like jewellery and sunglasses, and considering pre-loved clothing.

And yes, my own collection is down to 12 bags. That's after a clear out.

Thank you to Katie and Mark for telling the story so well.
